#smcedu – Social Media Education Chat

Today the Social Media Education Club organized their first twitter chat on social media education. Attendants were few and all of them except me (maybe I’m wrong) were from the US. Some interesting questions were asked but I for one found the twitter chat quite confusing when it came to follow the conversation as people’s re-tweets (RTs) kept coming up and questions seemed also to come from more than one source.

However, youth health it was good to see that there are other educators out there trying to integrate social media in academia and moreover, that there is interest in collaboration and sharing ideas. If you are interested in joining or following the conversation check the Social Media Club Education Connection and to get access to some resources check the Social Media Club Education Initiative. Also to see the complete conversation that  featured #smcedu or #smceduchat check the links. A conversation excerpt and my suggestions are copied below.

  1. Sounds like a really good idea – but I agree with your suggestions Ana, it needs a place to “meet” online which isn’t twitter (a video/chat platform would be fab) – understandably though, twitter is the best tool for “amplifying” events and offline discussion to others (like us!) where the attendees do not need to commit too much extra thought to sharing the thoughts and the discussion.

I’ve done a little bit of work with social media and education, I will try find you some links to share soon! 🙂

    • There are platforms like TokBox and TinyChat which we’ve tested that allow sharing conversations on Twitter and Facebook, so smcedu could benefit both from the live video/audio interaction between participants and the amplifying of Twitter and Facebook. It’s up to the organizers after all take a decision in this direction.

As for us, maybe we should start our own UK chapter of Social Media Education Club. 🙂

Finally, when you have your links, post them here as well.

  2. Thank you so much for putting this post-chat-post together. Very glad to have you participating.

We could do this as a blogtalkradio show in the not too distant future, but other twitter hashtag chats have worked quite well, so I would like to stick with it a little longer before giving up entirely.

We originally launched Social Media Club in the UK back in 2006 with Lloyd Davis, so he has moved on to focus on Tuttle obviously, but we have great friends in the Social Media community across the UK… we just need a new leadership to step up. When I visited earlier this year I had a chance to tour Cambridge and learn quite a bit of history of learning. It was quite inspiring.

    • I’d recommend you give a try to ToxBox for chats like the one today. BlogTalk radio can be for special guests and special features. Let me know if you need more info.
